An Interview with Mr. Jackson, the new HHS principal

by Maria Ashe

Last June, Hamden High’s former principal Nadine Gannon left her position of seven years to pursue a new role as the Director of Adult Education for the Hamden Transition Academy. Following this leave, the school community has welcomed a new principal, Eric Jackson. In this interview, Mr. Jackson shares a bit more about himself and his educational background in hopes of further connecting with Hamden High students and staff.

Maria: What’s your background? How did you get involved in education?

Jackson: I embarked on my educational journey during my undergraduate years at the University of Massachusetts, where I focused on political science as my major and history as my minor. It was during this period that I developed a keen interest in pursuing a career in education. Subsequently, I entered the field as a high school educator, specializing in teaching Social Studies while also taking on coaching responsibilities for football, basketball, and golf in the greater Hartford area.

Maria: What school did you work at before Hamden High School?

Jackson: The most comparable leadership experiences I have had to serving Hamden High School involve my fifteen-year role as both a high school assistant principal and principal in Sarasota, Florida. Specifically, I held the position of Principal at Riverview High School in Sarasota and Venice High School in Venice, Florida. These institutions were both sizable, comprehensive high schools boasting student enrollments exceeding 2,400.

Maria: Why did you come to Hamden High School and what do you hope to achieve at our school?

Jackson: I chose to become the Principal of Hamden High School because I believe I can have a significantly positive impact on the school’s future. Hamden High School already boasts a range of outstanding academic offerings and a wide array of extracurricular programs, clubs, and organizations. I felt that my range of experiences and skill set could be of great benefit to Hamden High School. My hope is that, together, we can further enhance and build upon the school’s numerous accomplishments in the years to come.

Maria: What do you like to do outside of school?

Jackson: When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also try to get outside as often as possible. This could be as simple as a daily walk around the neighborhood as well as trying to get in a round of golf once a week. I also try to get 2 to 3 workouts per week so I can maintain some balance.

We are excited to welcome Mr. Jackson to our school and thankful that he took the time to answer our questions.
