On May 3rd, Alexander Medina achieved the school record for the two-mile in 9:28. That is 8 laps around the track and 3218 meters. The average time is about 16 minutes at eight minutes per mile, but Alex ran it at a blazing-fast pace of 4:44 minutes per mile. He is an amazing athlete, and this is the latest of many achievements. In training to run the two-mile, he shifted from his usual kilometer and 800-meter focused speed routine to a more endurance-focused running. He increased his weekly mileage from 60 to 70 miles per week. This mileage was split between 6-7 runs, split between a long run that is 10 or more miles, 3 easy runs of 8 miles, and two workouts. His workouts shifted from speed, short intervals, to longer intervals. He transitioned from running kilometer (.62 miles) repeats to doing mile repeats and longer. He said, “It feels great [to have the school record], but it feels even better to be representing my school.” He couldn’t have done it without the advice from his coaches Mr. Migliore, Mr. Lindamood, and Ms. Cambisaca. His favorite running shoes are the Nike Invincible 3s. To run the 2 mile, he ate his trusty pre-race meal of toast with peanut butter. However, if he has an evening race, he opts to fuel with a sandwich. His advice to younger runners is, “[to] keep your legs working and find a running buddy.”
