Sandra’s Next Generation is a soul food place down in New Haven at 636 Congress Street, and it is delicious. I ordered it for my birthday this year, and it was a hit with my hard-to-please family. I usually order the Shante’s plate with fried catfish, candied yams and baked mac and cheese. Everything also comes with a delicious piece of sweet cornbread. The catfish is taken to another level with a bit of lemon and hot sauce. The yams are sugary yet earthy. The mac and cheese is the best mac you’ll ever eat, even better than the boxed stuff. I also sometimes get fried chicken or collard greens that will win over even the pickiest of eaters. I highly recommend ordering the breast meat if you get the fried chicken. They also offer BBQ chicken, ribs, pork, shrimp, tilapia, black-eyed peas, rice, corn and much more. My meal is quite reasonably priced, at only $18.00, and it’s well worth the 40-minute (or more) wait when your dad goes to get it.
I would give it a solid 9.1 out of 10.
