Even after the season ends and the stands are quiet, high school athletes never completely stop training. The off-season is an excellent time for athletes to increase their strength and stamina and improve their skills. Skipping training for a long period can make it very hard to perform at the same level during the season as those who stay active and practice regularly.
During the off-season, players should focus on a mix of running, strength training, and drills to target any weaknesses. Sophomore Allie Aurora, a varsity player, goes to the gym and plays lacrosse year-round. “I am in shape for running when the season begins,” Aurora said. Practicing alone is important, but joining a club team can elevate your skills even more. Club teams provide opportunities to compete in tournaments and attend practices that challenge you, helping players develop faster and gain experience beyond high school.
Off-season training isn’t just about physical fitness; it’s also about discipline, focus, and motivation. This helps athletes stay mentally prepared for season challenges, which makes a big difference. “You can tell who goes to the gym,” Aurora said. “You can tell by whether they are weak or getting pushed off the soccer ball. You can also see a difference in their stamina and endurance.” Whether running laps or practicing footwork, high school athletes who train during the off-season come back stronger, faster, and more confident.
